Almost every travel pillow on the market uses one of three fillings: memory foam, air, or microbeads. They look similar on a shelf and cost roughly the same. They behave completely differently once you are three hours into a flight and trying to sleep sitting upright.

Memory foam

Memory foam is the default for a reason: it is the only one of the three that gives you the same support at the end of a flight as at the start. The foam compresses under the weight of your head and holds there, rather than pushing back or moving out of the way.

The important distinction inside this category is slow-rebound versus ordinary foam. Slow-rebound foam gives gradually and holds; cheaper foam is springier and pushes your head back up, which is what makes some memory foam pillows feel like they are working against you.

Where memory foam loses: bulk. A foam pillow cannot be made smaller than its foam. The good ones solve this two ways — by compressing into a zip case, or by folding flat. If you travel carry-on only, look for one of those two features specifically, because a pillow clipped to the outside of your bag is a pillow you will eventually stop bringing.

Buy memory foam if: you take flights longer than about four hours, you want one pillow you can stop thinking about, or you have woken up with a stiff neck often enough to be annoyed by it.

Inflatable

Inflatable pillows win on exactly one measurement, and it is a real one: they pack down to nothing. If your only constraint is space, nothing else comes close.

The trade-off is that air is not a supportive material in the way foam is. Air moves. When you lean, the air displaces to the other side of the chamber and your head follows it. That is fine for a forty-minute nap and much less fine on an overnight flight, which is also when a slow leak is most likely to catch up with you.

There is also a comfort issue people underrate: the surface. Most inflatables are coated nylon or plastic against your skin, which gets clammy in a warm cabin unless the pillow has a separate fabric cover — and a separate cover adds back some of the bulk you bought the pillow to avoid.

Buy inflatable if: you are genuinely at your bag limit, your flights are short, or you want a backup pillow that lives permanently in a bag pocket.

Microbead

Microbead pillows are filled with tiny polystyrene beads. They feel pleasant in the shop — soft, mouldable, slightly liquid. That is the problem. The beads move where the pressure is, which means they move away from your neck exactly when your neck needs them.

They also do not compress. A microbead pillow packs about as large as it is, and it is usually the heaviest of the three because the fabric shell has to be substantial enough to contain the beads.

Buy microbead if: you like the feel and you are mostly using it in a car or at home rather than solving a real in-flight sleep problem.

The thing that matters more than the filling

Filling determines how the pillow feels. Shape determines whether you actually sleep.

The single most common reason people wake on a plane is not that the pillow was too soft. It is that their head dropped forward and the sudden movement woke them. Most travel pillows are U-shaped and open at the front, which supports the back and sides of your neck and does nothing about the direction your head actually falls.
