How to Sleep on Overnight Trains, Buses and Long Car Journeys

Most advice about sleeping in transit is written about planes. Night trains, coaches and long car journeys share some of the problem — you're upright, your head drops, the light is wrong — but enough is different that plane advice only gets you halfway.

Here's what actually changes.

The thing planes don't have: constant lateral movement

A plane in cruise is remarkably still. A train is not, and a coach on a motorway is not at all.

This matters because your support has to handle sideways forces, not just gravity. On a plane, your head falls in one predictable direction and stays there. On a train, it gets nudged left and right every few seconds by the track, and every time it moves, the muscles you were trying to let relax fire again to correct.

That's why people who sleep passably on planes often sleep terribly on trains and can't work out why. It isn't the seat. It's that a pillow which only stops a slow forward drop does nothing about repeated sideways nudging.

What helps: raised sides, and a snug fit rather than a loose one. A pillow with adjustable tension — one you can actually tighten against your neck — beats a loose fixed-size pillow here by a wide margin, because a loose pillow moves with the vehicle instead of against it. This is the one use case where adjustability outranks everything else.

Coaches: the seat in front is your biggest variable

On a long-distance coach, whether the person in front reclines determines your entire night. There's nothing you can do about it, so plan around it.

  • Book a seat where nobody reclines into you: the front row, or the row behind a partition. Worth paying for on a 10-hour journey.
  • Avoid the back row. Same as on planes — often non-reclining, next to the toilet, and the ride is roughest over the rear axle.
  • Aisle over window on a coach, unlike on a plane. Coach windows are cold, hard, and vibrate directly against your skull. There's no comfortable way to lean on one.

Night trains: the couchette question

If you have the choice between a seat and a couchette, take the couchette. Lying flat changes the problem entirely — you're no longer fighting head drop at all, and everything below becomes irrelevant.

If you're in a seat:

  • Face the direction of travel if you can choose. Being pushed back into your seat under braking is easier to sleep through than being thrown forward.
  • Sit over a bogie, not between them, if the carriage layout lets you tell. The middle of a carriage pitches more.
  • Expect to be woken at borders. On international routes, passport checks happen at whatever hour they happen. Keep documents somewhere you can hand them over without fully waking up and hunting.

Cars: only if you're not driving, and only parked

Two things worth saying plainly before the practical advice.

If you're the driver, sleep is not a thing to optimise — it's a signal to stop. Pull over properly and rest. Drowsy driving is genuinely dangerous, and no amount of gear changes that.

If you're sleeping in a parked car overnight, park somewhere legal and safe — a service station, a designated rest area, a campsite — and keep the engine off. Running the engine for heat in an enclosed space risks carbon monoxide exposure. Use blankets and layers instead.

For passengers on a long drive:

  • The B-pillar is the enemy. Leaning your head on the window frame means every road imperfection travels straight into your skull. A pillow with proper side height gives you a buffer.
  • Recline less than you'd think. A steeply reclined seat with a lap belt is a genuinely bad combination in a collision. Keep the recline modest and the belt properly positioned.
  • Seatbelt over the blanket, visible. Same principle as on a plane.

What carries over from flights

Three things work the same everywhere:

Front support. Whatever the vehicle, your head still falls forward when your neck muscles let go. A U-shape that's open at the front leaves that direction unsupported. If you already own a pillow with a chin panel or a closable front for flights, it's the same pillow you want here.

Blocking light properly. Coaches have overhead reading lights and headlights sweeping past every few seconds. Trains have station platforms every couple of hours. A contoured mask does more on ground transport than in a dark plane cabin, not less.

Blocking sound. Road and rail noise is broader-spectrum than the low drone of a jet engine, which means noise-cancelling helps less and simple foam earplugs help more. Bring both if you have them.

The short version

On a plane, you're solving a slow, predictable fall in one direction. On the ground, you're solving repeated small movements in every direction, which is a harder problem for a loose pillow and an easier one for a snug, adjustable one.
